most noted for developing the modern oboe. The script "T" often
looks more like a capital "C" to those who are unfamiliar with the
mark. If it is a Triebert, it is old enough that you should check
the pitch before seriously considering acquisition: it may have been
built for high pitch, rather than today's A440.Enjoy!

The CB rackett I have only reaches C1 (see http://www.loraine.com/instruments.html). Perhaps I should distinguish between Renaissance and Baroque rackets (although AFAIK there aren't any Baroque contrabass racketts). Anyone else with rackett experience?
Of necessity, most of the brass ranges (and most of the upper ranges) will be more approximate. I seem to recall a tuba sonata or concerto that is famous for having the lowest written tuba note - something like Bb-1: anyone remember the piece/composer/note?
Thanks,
Grant

Excuse me?! As a Contrabass Trombonist, I'll take exception to this. I have
a C below this G0. What key of CB Trb are you thinking of? F?, Eb?, D?. Mine
is in BBb.CC and BBb

Most of us have CC, & BBb tubas with at least 4 valves, some have 5 & 6
valves.cb. rackett down to Bb whatever) and could fill in
> all your top values too--but to do so I would just be looking them
> all up in my book and copying the data to you.Be careful when talking about the high end in Brass. The "top" note is only
limited by the player.Tom

When questioned he was at first unwilling to admit to any range
restrictions at all in either direction. When I threw out the 2nd
Brandenburg as a test of this theory, he grudgingly agreed that, yes,
there were practical limits that could be designated. He then gave
me the F# below the piano as a *practical* bottom note--regardless of
the number of valves. I don't doubt for a moment that you can hit
the C below that (or whatever), but I know that the G above my F#
gave the tubist of the Philadelphia Orchestra (who I presume must be
one of the finest in the world) considerable trouble when the
orchestra played *Arcana* last spring. And I know too that none of
the bottom Bbs (lowest on the piano) that I wrote in the tuba part of
a recent clar. concerto got played when the Warsaw Phil. recorded the
piece. Similar considerations influenced my choice of G on the
contra trombone. In any event, the outside pitches I was flinging in
my preceding posting were *more* extreme than those now posted at the
Contrabass web site, and are still, I believe, the most extreme
published in any orchestration manual.>Be careful when talking about the high end in Brass. The "top" note is only

practicality, and in just about every case the practical limit has
been creeping steadily upward for some 2 centuries. In a lot of cases
(horn, vn) there are technological boosts, too, so it's often
difficult to untangle.
