Subject: [CB] More CDs :-)
A couple more CDs, including one that is going onto the contrabassoon discography as one of the few (sole?) examples of jazz contrabassoon.
- "Duets" by Susan Allen and Vinny Golia (1998?, 9winds NWCD0204). VG plays piccolo, flute, alto & bass flute, strich, Bb and bass clarinet, soprano sax, and contrabassoon, while SA plays *harp*. The entire disc is a set of (improvised?) duets between harp and one or another wind. Interesting, creative, introspective. I especially liked the contrabassoon tracks ;-)
- "circular logic" by Steve Adams and Vinny Golia (9winds, NWCD0203). Face it: VG, Scott Robinson, Anthony Braxton, and to some degree Lenny Pickett, seem to be the only jazz musicians making significant use of the low end these days (and there aren't even all that many guys who specialize on bari sax). This disc is actually a little similar to "Duets", except that the harp in this case is replaced with another multi-instrumentalist. Steve Adams plays C/alto/bass flutes and sopranino through bari saxophones, while VG plays sopranino/bari/bass saxes, english horn, bassoon, picc/C/alto/bass flutes, and Eb/Bb/A/alto/bass/contralto/contrabass clarinets. The tracks are listed on the back along with a chart of who plays what on which track, e.g., "Phonation" has SA on alto flute, and VG on contrabass clarinet. Interesting listening, with a lot of ideas. The tracks are:
