Subject: [CB] CD Review
A couple of excellent CDs just received, both "free jazz" trios led by Vinny Golia:
- "Triangulation" (9 Winds NWCD0193, no year listed) includes VG on most of the clarinets (A, Bb, alto, contralto, contrabass), plus sopranino and bass sax, George Lewis on trombone, and Bertram Turetzky on bass, for 65 minutes of improvisation in the style of Anthony Braxton. The low sax and clarinets are easy to hear ;-) The tracks are:
- Triangulations & Interferences
- Bu-Dun
- Simultaneous Disturbances
- Duet for Trombone & Contrabass
- In Shadow There is Light
- Foot on Art
- 3rd Piece in Quarters
- Duet for Sopranino Saxophone & Trombone
- Gianormous
- "Trignition" (9winds NWCD0221, no year) includes VG on Eb/bass/contrabass clarinets, soprano/bari saxes, and suonas (you'll know it when you hear them!), Bertram Turetzky again on bass, and Barre Phillips on another bass (yes, two basses simultaneously). This time, its 75 minutes of improvisation, with interesting interplay between the two basses and the winds (sometimes all in the same registers). The tracks:
- The Incomplete Touching of the Ground
- Spherics & Whistles
- Dale of the Merry Years
- Confirmation of Judgement
- Inconabular
- Bigman, Hugeman!
- Saylaa
- It was probably the last one to be named
- Anodyne
Both are great CDs if you like free jazz. I think they'll be on the short stack by my CD player for a while :-)Grant
