Since everyone else seems to do it, I might as well introduce myself too:
My name is Tommy Naslund and I live in Stockholm, Sweden. My big interest in life is music but I do not play professionally.
Ever since I started playing sax in orchestras I have felt drawn to the lower register. I never wanted to play the first alto, always the second. Then I started playing tenor for a while and later on also baritone, that has become my main instrument. OK, it WAS my favourite until just a couple of months ago... Then I bought my very first bass sax. An old dream come true! I just love playing it, I try to use it as often as I can as a substitute for baritone. But I am still hunting for a good mouthpiece, if you know of any please let me know (no classical though). Right now I am trying to use my baritone Otto Link no 9, It gives a lot of power to the tone, but the intonation is not very good.
Earlier I have also played contrabass and bass clarinet and even some bassoon, not contra though. I liked the contrabass clarinet, but the power was just not there.
I think this idea of a forum for bass woodwinds is just great!
By the way, has anyone got a copy of the bass saxophone special issue of The Saxophone Journal or perhaps know how I can find it?
Tommie Naslund.
Stockholm, Sweden.

Subj: Contrabass Discography
I mentioned yesterday that a discography of (approximately) contrabass instruments would be interesting and possibly useful. Francis pointed out that we already had a listing of instruments started for another project, and that the list would make a good starting point for the discography - sort of a form to fill in. I've edited the list down to the bass and lower instruments, and left out a few of the really common bass instruments (like the string bass and the bass trombone). Everyone is welcome to participate, if they like.
What I have in mind is that we could list, for as many as possible of the following, at least a few representative recordings, with at least title and publisher, optionally with all available detail, so that people will have a resource to consult if they want to hear a recording of, say, a contrabasset horn.
For some of these instruments, there will be thousands of recordings (e.g., for bass flute, contrabassoon): for such instruments, I think it would be a good idea to concentrate on listing a few "representative" or characteristic works, ideally featuring the instrument in some solo or exposed part (like Susan Nigro's "The Big Bassoon" CD). For many of these, we'll be lucky to find any CD that includes a croak or two: I won't mind listing all of the CDs (or CD) that use an octocontrabass clarinet. It's a long list, so (for me at least) I expect this will be an ongoing project, with periodic updates.
