Contrabass list Fri, 17 Apr 1998 Volume 1 : Number 49

Subject: CD Review
Overall, the CD is pleasant Japanese jazz. Akiko Yano has a slightly nasal singing voice, reminding me of a Japanese Michael Jackson (although her style is much closer to Michael Franks). Two of the tracks include Keith Underwood on Kotato contrabass flute (the liner notes specify "contrabass flute by KOTATO"). Unfortunately, those tracks also include bassoon and four French horns: the resulting texture is so thick that it is difficult to distinguish the contrabass flute, particularly as the focus of the tracks are AY's vocals. I'll have to go over them again with headphones to see if there's any clear example.
Anyway, there you have it. Two tracks of probably inaudible (or indistinguishable) contrabass flute, buried under French horns and a bassoon. The music is nice, anyway...

New stuff on Contrabass.com:
Real finally dropped the price on their encoding software, and came out with a version that doesn't require a dedicated RealAudio server to run, so I've started going through the site and providing RealAudio versions of various clips. RA makes for much smaller file sizes and faster downloads: at some point, I'll probably completely replace all the WAV files with RA.
Anyway, so far you can find RA versions of the great bass sordune (http://www.contrabass.com/pages/gbsord.html), I think - new page linked to the compendium page), the "Papermoon" clip on Eb contrabass sarrusophone, a few clips of the Bb bass sarrusophone, and the two songs Dave and I recorded (see http://www.contrabass.com/pages/pro_fool.html ).
Enjoy!

Subject: Anaconda Alert
Hi,
Anyone who'll be in the Boston area on April 29, 1998, might be interested in Doug Yeo's serpent lecture/demonstration. Amongst other things, he'll be demonstrating the 16' contrabass serpent (the Anaconda). Admission is free, but limited to 50 people. Details (and a picture of Mr. Yeo playing the beast) at http://www.yeodoug.com/yeosched.html .
Enjoy!
