Grant,
With regards to your questions about my letter: I don't recall who was displaying the cimbasso, but it was brand new. The instrument had six valves; four for the right hand, and two, up higher on the instrument, for the left.
The high D I was refering to on the fox contra was the one an octave above the D just above middle C. I was able to play chromaticaly up to it without effort. I have seen high A's and Bb's in orchestra contra parts I have encountered and I have a contra fingering chart with fingerings up to the G above the D I am refering to!
I hope this clarifies some things!
