Hell,

I will introduce myself.

I am from England and am a librarian by profession.

I have played bassoon since school days but have always been fascinated by all things contrabass.

A couple of years ago I managed to afford (just!) a contrabassoon. Nothing special as it's an Adler but it does go down to low A. My performance on this is still very beginner-ish as my daughter was born only 12 months later (last year) and I have had my hands pretty full since then.

Some years ago I bought a bass rackett (made by Wood) but must see about replacing its plastic reed with a wooden one. I should like to buy a contrabass rackett when I have the money but it will probably have to be in Kit form I shall just have to hope that I have enough handyman skills to make it).

I have lots of literature and recordings of contrabass instruments ranging from Sub contrabass flutes through contrabass clarinets, sarrusophones and bass horns through to recently ordered piece using subbass recorders in F (really contrabass in F) and I am hoping someone will record something on Paetzold's new subcontrabass recorder in C.

Marion mentions getting a contralto flute by Howel Peters. Is this the same person as the Howel Roberts whose card I got (also at Top Wind) when asking about sub-bass and contrabass flutes?

What I'm looking for now is a recording with a solo on Kotato's Double Contrabass Flute in C (contrabassoon range). I have it in a flute choir recording by Piacere but should like to hear it solo. The nearest I've come is on Michael Heupel's recordings using his Double Contralto Flute in G. I've just acquired 2 great jazz CDs by PATA Music (in Germany) on which he uses this instrument, often in a double bass role but some solos, duets, etc.

What I'd really like to own is Leblanc's unique Octocontrabass clarinet made in c. 1938 and owned by Leon leblanc himself (now 90 years old). That goes down 1 octave below the contrabassoon and the piano! Really something.

Francis,

You may want to look at the racketts (and reeds) made by Keith Loraine.

The catalog I have from him (which may be a bit out of date) lists the following:

He also makes reeds to fit any woodwind instrument, although he asks that you send him the instrument so that he can make a reed to play in tune with the particular horn. If you don't send the instrument, you need to be ready to "touch up" the reed yourself (I guess we bassoonists are used to that). I'm sure he could make you a nice cane reed or two for your bass rackett.

I don't think he has a fax machine.
