Subject: [CB] "Piccolo Heckelphone" ??? Ebay Abreviation Question
Date: Thu, 6 Jun 2002 16:25:41 -0700
Dear Grant and fellow bassophiles,
A "piccolo Heckelphone " has appeared on Ebay
("old oboe piccolo Heckelphone"). The bell of this instrument does NOT appear to resemble even remotely the bells of the piccolo Heckelphones I have seen at the Heckel museum and factory (all four or five have a distinctly Heckelphone shaped ["squat"] bell. BEWARE !
If this truly were a piccolo Heckelphone, it should at least have a trademark stamp. A true piccolo Heckelphne
(only one known to exist in private hands) could easily fetch an asronomical (!) sum at auction...
Question. I have found a listing for Heckelphone:
Boulanger, Bernard
Dudelsack Spielen
Sonstige for oboe d'amore, Bassetthorn, Heckelphone, D
Verlag der Spielleute
Can anyone surmise what the "D" may stand for
Doppelfagott ? Can anyone translate the German for me ? (seven years of Latin of not much help here...)
Thanks ! Best wishes, Peter Hurd

Wasn't easy to track it down ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=881702514 ). To me, it looks like an old oboe musette with simple system keywork, possibly in F or Eb. I agree it does not look like a piccolo Heckelphone, either in shape or in keywork (cf. plate X in Baines, "Woodwind Instruments and their history").

"Dudelsack spielen" translates roughly as "bagpipe tunes" (literally "the bagpipe plays"). "Verlag der Spielleute" is musicians' publishing house. As for the D, my guess is that the work is in the key of D.
Enjoy,
Grant

Further (or remaining) for oboe d'amore, Bassetthorn, Heckelphone,
D appears a bit out of context here. But in German "D" mostly is the official abbreviation of "Deutschland" (= Germany). My guess would be that the listings in question are from Germany or with German text.

The Edition of the (Folksy) Players/Musicians (as opposed to symphonic players)
I want to apply any imaginable disclaimers, as I by principle am reluctant to translate bits taken out of their context. And I have a strong suspicion, that your quotes not are fully true regarding the use of capital letters.

True, but in all fairness looking at the other items for sale, the seller is like a lot of other sellers on Ebay, an antique/collectables/curios/junk dealer.
They probably looked through one of the guides of musical instruments, and picked out what ever looked close to what they had in front of them. The $9 starting bid isn't bad, I wonder if it is really more of a 19th century version of a mussette or shawm?
Same seller also had a Mollenhaur oboe starting for $9. Must be a popular starting price.

FWIW,
There is a BBb Paperclip contra on ebay at:

Has three days left on the auction, and is currently at $901.

That looks exactly like a musette. A scale would tell us for sure, but the keywork and lack of a bocal makes it closely resemble a musette.
Modern 'musettes' are the Eb clarinets of the double reed family and are nothing more than oboes in F, but this looks a lot like the older kind, a French folk instrument with a double reed. This could easily date from the early 20th century as well as late 19th, as
some folk instruments (such as the tarogato) have been made more recently for folk music, despite being somewhat obsolete from a wider standpoint.
