"bhn" stands for basset horn.  Having a person double on bassoon and basset horn is actualy not all that unlikely. There are quite a few bassoon players that double on bass clarinet and vice a versa.  The basset horn very similar in many ways to the modern (low-C) bass clarinet.  "bhn" is a marking that is used for basset horn a lot...at least in all the reading I have done.

However, it is a bit of mystery why the heck you would have a basset horn in a Paul Whiteman Orchestra.  Perhaps he wanted its warm meloncholy sound for some sort of slow piece or something. It's too bad I don't have CD, I'd be able to pick out the sound easily.

Could "avln" be the acoustic violin, as opposed to the electronic violin, which would be "evln"?

My reaction to the combination of "bhn, bassoon" is also that it is likely basset horn.  Since a basset horn is a type of clarinet it is rather likely that a reed doubler would play that as well as bassoon.

Actually, this sounds pretty plausible: it seems to me that PW was after novel arrangements - after all, the same musician is playing bassoon on that track, while the piano player is doubling on celeste, and someone else plays accordion.  You can hear the exact track on the Red Hot Jazz page - the full song is reproduced in glorious mono ;-)

Enjoy,

Grant

Things are near standard order, avln is where you would expect alto violin = viola.  (bhn) basset horn => Eb clarinet. The difference is pretty small.  looks good to me.  Oscar

The San Jose Wind Symphony will be performing again this Friday, June 7, 2002 at Los Gatos High School.  This is a joint concert with LGHS - I think it is free...  The program includes some combination of the following (the Vaughn Williams is definitely on):

Come and enjoy!
