I finally found a copy of "Ships at Sea, Sailors & Shoes" by Ned Sublette,
Lawrence Weiner & The Persuasions (1993 Triple Earth, TRECD112).  It is
definitely one of the more curious CDs I've run across, combining elements
of Country and Soul.  A number of the tracks are essentially NS (country)
with the Persuasions (soul) a cappella or with acoustic guitar.

It *does* however include Lenny Pickett on sarrusophone on one track (4,
"Just Over There (Silver)"), and although it is not near the top of the
mix, it is definitely noticeable (and well-used).

I managed to locate a copy through Song Search ( http://www.songsearch.net ),
which specializes in hard to find and imported CDs.  They were able to find
the CD and get it shipped fairly quickly, considering its obscurity.

Enjoy!

Grant

Subject: [CB] leblanc contra-alto reeds

Hi,
I am new in this list. I am a piano and tuba player and I just got a contra alto clarinet leblanc (to low C ).
I have three questions:
  1. what does it means paperclip model?
  2. what kind of reeds should I use on that instrument to start?  The instrument have the standard mouthpiece, I think.
  3. Is there some choice for mouthpieces for that instrument?

Thanks for help

Welcome!

>1) what does it means paperclip model?

The Leblanc contras that have range extended to low C (model 340
contrabass, and model 350 contra-alto) are folded so that the instrument
makes a large loop, with the bell at the top of the instrument.  Many
people think that it resembles a giant "paperclip", hence the
nickname.  This is mainly to distinguish the low C models from the
"straight" models that only reach low Eb (model 342 contrabass, model 352
contra-alto).  The straight models are shaped like large metal bass
clarinets, with a small bell at the floor that is shaped like a bass
clarinet bell.

I would start with a Vandoren #2 contrabass clarinet reed.  The same reeds
fit contrabass clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, and bass sax.

>3) Is there some choice for mouthpieces for that instrument?

The Leblanc contrabass and contra-alto have the same bore diameter, and
take the same mouthpiece.  There are mouthpieces by Leblanc, Woodwind
(which is a subsidiary of Leblanc) that fit well.  Clark W. Fobes makes a
couple of custom mouthpieces for contrabass and contra-alto clarinets (see
http://www.clarkwfobes.com ).  The BBb contra mpc works well (this is what I
use on BBb contra), and I think should work well on the EEb contra too
(although I have not tried it).  The Eb contra-alto mpc is designed for the
Selmer contra-alto, which has a different bore diameter: this I think is
less likely to be as effective.

Enjoy!

Dear Ugo;

Welcome to our club!

I just wanted to confirm what Grant had stated about the Fobes contra bass
mouthpiece.  I have a Leblanc paperclip contra alto as well as a leblanc
straight contra bass.  I use the wonderful mouthpiece that Mr. Fobes makes on
both horns and love it on both.  I would strongly recommend that if you are
searching for a contra mouthpiece, try a Fobes model, you will not regret it!

Reeds can sometimes be difficult to find locally.  Once again, Grant has
given you great advice to start with the Vandoreen #2.  Woodwind & Brasswind
have them in stock (just ordered my annual box an hour ago!) at 800-348-5003.
