I've never heard of a Walker bass sax. Does anyone know anything about this
brand? (Age? Nationality? Quality?)Lelia

Subject: [CB] CD Review!
Just finished listening to a pile of CDs, all of which include Peter A. Schmid on a variety of clarinets (including contra).
-"September Winds" (2001 Creative Works Records, CW1038/39) includes Hans Anliker (tbn); Evan Parker (ss, ts); Peter A. Schmid (Eb cl, bass cl, contrabass cl, sopranino sax, wood flute); Reto Senn (cl, bs cl, tarogato); and Jürg Solothurnmann (as, ss) on a double CD of free jazz. This CD and the next one were recorded inside an abandoned water cistern full of sloping, non-parallel walls and supporting pillars. No sound-deadening material anywhere. Makes for a very interesting, meditative performance.
-"September Duos" (2001 Creative Works Records, CW1036) is just Evan Parker (ss, ts) and Peter A. Schmid (Eb cl, bcl, cbcl) exploring the same reverberant environment together. Great interplay. Reminds me a lot of some of the Vinny Golia duet CDs.
-"Schmilz" (2002 Creative Works Records, CW1041) is Peter A. Schmid (Eb clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet); Michel Pilz (bass clarinet); Herbert Kramis (bass); Dominik Burger (drums). Recorded in an actual studio ;-), this CD is mainly modern/free jazz that mainly features the two bass clarinets. Also great stuff!
If that isn't enough, Peter has apparently acquired a tubax, and is rehearsing with Thomas K.J. Mejer (contrabass sax) for another duo to be called "Two Tubax". Order your subwoofers now ;-) I'm not sure if you can find the CDs at Tower (even online), but you *can* order from the Creative Works website: they apparently send you a bill when they ship the CDs, but I haven't heard yet if you need to pay in Swiss francs if they'll accept Visa... Peter also has a website of his own, at http://www.paschart.ch, worth looking up.
Enjoy,
Grant

Subject: Re: [CB] San Jose Wind Symphony Performance?Looks like a great program. I notice Phantom is on the program. We do it about once a year with one or another of the three concert bands (in fact are doing it now with the Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches - Last Sat and again on the 23rd ) and my wife is the designated screamer. Scares the heck out of new members the first time she does it at rehearsals. We have considered putting her in the audience. but are actually afraid of causing a heart attack, (to say nothing of the wet pants). John
PS - I have been playing mostly BB Contra with this group this year & am waiting for my Clark Forbs Contra mouthpiece (the Student model he just added to his lineup.) It should be here this week.
