It is my understanding that the only companies that have made contrabasses are Evette-Schaffer and Orsi. Yes, recently LA Sax has began selling contrabasses, but it is an Orsi with the LA Sax name slapped on it.
I once saw a lovely silver contrabass sax for sale in France by Buffet. Also, Scott Robinson plays an antique contrabass sax he found in Rome, which I don't think is Orsi or Evette-Schaffer (I could be wrong, however). And the Eppelsheim company of Germany makes their "Tubax contrabass saxophone" which sells for under $20K new, but looks like the illegitimate child of a sarrusophone and a sewer pipe. Those are all I know of, though.

Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.comI sure would like Dr. Paul Cohen's input on this, he is the real expert here.
Before LA Sax starting making Orsi instruments as a production model, I
thought Dr. Cohen told me that there were about 14 alive contrabasses, but
that Evette-Schaffer made a few more. Dr., what's the scoop?Stuart

Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.comTHe instrument sold at IWB in Manhattan was an Orsi Eb Contrabass Sax.
I am unaware of Selmer ever constructing such an instrument; the writer
who alluded to one may have meant a Bb Bass Sax, which Selmer makes.Robert Howe

Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.comThe contrabass sax that was just sold at Rod Baltimore's (a/k/a
International Woodwind & Brass was an Orsi. I had the pleasure of playing
it after it was sold but before the owner picked it up. It was a religious
experience (even if the mouthpiece had so much scotch tape on it that I got
a blister on my lip). I play bari generally, and I couldn't believe how far
apart my hands were -- the left hand was above my head and the right hand
was down almost as far as it could go. You could count the vibrations per
second on the low notes (or so it seemed). Rod took a picture of me playing
it (with my family listening) -- I'll scan it and post it somehow (and/or
e-mail it to Grant Green for further fun). Now, if I only had the $$$$....---------------------------------------------------------
