Subject: The Bassoon as a Sound Effect
Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.comThis is a short Essay I have prepared, which I am, testing for approval
on this list. Please tell me or respond to this if you have
corrections, disagreements, suggestions or thoughts, please.!!To whom it may concern (bassoonists on the List)…
Any one of you who's been paying attention to life sees the bassoon's
frequent use as a sound effect in pop music or movie scores.
The bassoon seems to me to have a lot of character to it, with a very
profound sound.
In film scores, the bassoon's sinister and mischeivious tones are used
to great effect (along with the bass clarinet.) Its middle register can
portray a ridiculous prescence or a lurking evil.
Its threatening, gruff low register is used well portraying ominous
events about to happen, although this low register has also been
brought down to a degenerative level when it is used to personify
cartoon villains (Mr. Stump, Drake, or Scar [from Lion King] )
Even moreso with the contrabassoon, used to tremendous potential in
horror movies (Deep Blue Sea, the Haunting. Alfred Hitchcock, etc.)
Although the bassoon's low notes are most frequently used, its middle
registrer is not exempt. At the end of Bungalow Bill (the Beatles) the
bassoon solo gives a seedy, low-rent, pathetic quality to the song.
ANYBODY WHO HAS THIS BEATLES SONG, PLAY IT AND HEAR THE END! IT IS A
GOOD EXAMPLE.
When played quickly the basson has a haphazard quality occasionally
made use of in RoadRunner vs. Wily Coyote cartoons!-Adam

Subject: Didgeridoo on Ebay!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.comHey, there's a Disgeridoo on Ebay! It actually looks like a pretty
crappy instrument, it's made of plastic and not great-looking. It is
brand new though, no bids yet. It's really not that bad for the price
(although a store where I live sells beautiful bamboo didgeridoos for
50 and up, which are very good. You might want to chech this out if you
don't own a didgeridoo.-Adam
